5 ways to finally get rid of blackheads

5 ways to finally get rid of blackheads

21 May 2024 – 2 min read

Found yourself staring into the mirror wondering how to get rid of the blackheads on your nose or chin? (Been there!) Blackheads are clogged pores filled with trapped skin debris, sebum and oils that appear black due to oxidisation from exposure to air. They can be caused by everything from hormonal changes and genetics to bacteria and comedogenic cosmetics, but the good news is there are various ways to keep pesky blackheads at bay – read on for our top tips.

1. Look for cleansers with salicylic acid

When dealing with blackheads, your best bet is to cleanse with a water-based gel or cream that contains salicylic acid, such as Clean Canvas Gel Cleanser. As a BHA, salicylic acid penetrates down into the hair follicle and oil gland where blackheads start. This helps to remove the sebum and debris that makes up a blackhead and helps heal post-inflammatory discolouration.

2. Double cleanse regularly

Congested and oily skin will love that double cleansing even more thoroughly whisks away the sebum and bacteria that can lead to blemishes and blackheads. Start with Overachiever Balm Cleanser to draw out oil-based impurities such as sunscreen, makeup and pollutants, followed by Clean Canvas as above.

3. Prevent with retinoids

Though better known for their anti-ageing properties, Retinoids also treat and prevent blackheads by regulating skin cell turnover, decreasing sebum production and shrinking oil glands. When it comes to retinol vs retinal, it’s worth remembering that retinal is the only retinoid with direct antibacterial properties, making Super Retinal Vitamin A Serum ideal for blemish-prone skin.

4. Step away from the pore strips

Though the satisfaction of ripping one off is undeniable, pore strips often do more harm than good. The adhesive can irritate an already sensitive area, removing or damaging the skin instead of just clearing your pores (especially if it contains drying additives like alcohol or other astringents). Opt for a gentle clay mask instead, which can decongest your pores long-term.

5. Avoid at-home extractions

Similarly, at-home extractions can cause irritation, inflammation and even long-term scarring. If you have clogged pores that aren’t improving with the above tips, consider seeing a specialist who can create a personalised treatment plan, safely perform extractions or prescribe a stronger retinoid if needed.
